Enhancing their services, the Indian railways has launched a takeaway bed roll scheme to enable passengers book bed sheets, pillow and blankets online, at nominal cost.
Currently, only passengers in the AC coaches are given bed linen which are supposed to be left in the train.
This initiative, 'Personalised takeaway bedrolls scheme', is also called the E-bedroll services scheme, as passengers with a valid PNR can book the kit online.
The bedrolls can be taken home after the journey. There will be two types of kits available, one costing Rs 110 and other Rs 140.
Passengers can buy the bed roll at Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) outlets at the station or book it online from IRCTC's official website, though the payment has to be done online itself. It can be booked 60 days in advance or even up to five hours before the departure of the train.
The booking can be canceled or amended through the same website with a registered ID, but cancellation should be done five hours prior to the time of departure to avail refund. 20% cancellation charges will apply. The toll free number 1323 will provide all the information pertaining to the kit.
The service of this new initiative will be available only between 6 am and 10 pm.
As of yet, the scheme is only available at Chennai Central railway station and Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. It will be extended to other stations soon.
