THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a major ganja haul, the Railway Protection Force and Railway police jointly seized 45 kilograms of ganja from Central Railway Station here on Saturday.

The contraband was found concealed in separate plastic covers wrapped in a saree on the first platform of the Railway station. However, no arrests have been made yet by the sleuths as the culprits are suspected to have fled from the spot after abandoning the contraband at the platform.

According to Railway Police officials, the big seizure was part of random check conducted at the trains and platforms in search for the smuggling of ‘hawala’ money in view of elections. The random check was held following a tip-off received by DIG (intelligence) P Vijayan.

“We chanced upon a abandoned pack covered with a saree. When we opened it,  we found ganja conealed in separate plastic covers. We suspect that the contraband was smuggled by the inter-state network to be peddled among the migrant labourers. They smuggled it under the pretext of transporting sarees. However, a probe has been initiated and efforts are on to trace the culprits.Hopefully the arrests will made shortly”, K Pradeep, Railway Police CI.
