Planning to travel by train on the weekend? Watch out for mega blocks. The railways will launch a major maintenance drive on Sundays across all zones which can disrupt and delay train traffic.
What is a mega block?
A mega block means suspension of traffic on a long stretch due to maintenance work. The railways will block a large number of routes to carry out maintenance work which will delay trains. These blocks will of six to seven hours of duration.
Why on Sunday?
The decision for holding mega blocks on Sundays has been taken after it was seen that fewer passengers travel on Sundays when compared to other days.
When will they come?
Small blocks keep happening on week days but Sundays have been reserved for mega blocks.
The Indian Railways will rework its timetable by August 15 and identify the trains which will be affected by the maintenance drive. Following this, the drive will be formally launched.
The silver lining
If you plan to travel on Sundays, get ready to bear with the delays. However, if a train gets delayed during meal times, passengers with reserved tickets will get free food and water.
Don't miss these alerts
Time-tables of all the zonal railways will be revised in such a way that maintenance work is carried out in a planned manner. Passengers would be informed about delays through SMS and advertisement in newspapers. Additional trains would be arranged for to make up for the delays. The railways will also introduce GPS loggers in the system, which will help log the progress of each train on a real-time basis, which will help log the progress of each train on a real-time basis, which will then be uploaded on the railways' website. The passengers can type in their train number and get to know the location of the train.
